Climate Battle began as a graduation project shaped by one central question: how do you engage people with climate change when they are not already interested?
Instead of creating something loaded with facts or urgency, the project took a more playful route. A two-player game where one person takes on the role of a climate activist and the other a hedonist. Through everyday actions such as composting, flying, binge-watching or planting trees, players try to win over characters to join their side. It is a game that shows how small choices can ripple outward, influencing others and adding up to something larger.
The visual world of the game was sculpted to reflect this tone. Humorous and colourful, but always with a thread of meaning running through it. In 2023, the sculptural works were exhibited at Rijksmuseum Twenthe as part of the RMT x AKI graduation show. It showed how pieces made for a game could carry their own weight in an exhibition setting.
Climate Battle makes space for reflection without pointing fingers. It is a game after all. It doesn’t lecture, but it does offer something to think about. Inviting players to see their own habits from a different angle, through play.
